There's probably been a split in the mplayer and mencoder packages. I don't recall if they were packaged as mplayer only, but they appear to be offered separately now.

I was going to use xvidenc and got a "can't find MEncoder" error.
I installed xvidenc with only mencoder as a dependency (not mplayer), and I got "can't find MPlayer".
So, I finally installed with both mencoder and mplayer as dependencies and everything works again.

Either dig a bit further and adjust the dependencies with better understanding, or mencoder and mplayer packages are now both explicitly needed!
