`git clone` invocation is hardcoded into makepkg (/usr/share/makepkg/source/git.sh:45 for makepkg 5.0.1), there seems to be no way of changing this. Also, I'm orphaning this package since I no longer actively use mod_pagespeed and lack the motivation and time to maintain the package. Feel free to adopt it.

Can you git clone --depth=1 instead of the entire repo?

Sorry, I don't use ngnix. The PKGBUILD is based on Google's official instructions, you can easily make a package based on these for ngnix as well:

Can you make a package for nginx too?

1) depot-tools-git and unzip have been added to makedepends. make does not need to be listed, per the wiki: "Note: Packages in the AUR assume that the base-devel group is installed, i.e. they do not list the group's members as dependencies explicitly." [1]

2) Done.

3,4) pkgver() now checks out the latest numeric tag from the git repo. I have no idea how to translate the "latest-stable" tag into a numeric tag, so this in fact checks out release latest-stable - 1. Pointers on how to get the very latest version are welcome. Anyway, updated to

You may want to think about making a wrapper around the deb package.

1) The package depends on depot-tools-git, make, unzip.
2) Move
export PATH=/opt/depot-tools-git/:$PATH # just in case depot_tools isn't in $PATH
gclient.py config https://github.com/pagespeed/mod_pagespeed.git --unmanaged --name=src
to prepare()
3) Package is out of date.
4) ==> ERROR: pkgver is not allowed to contain colons, hyphens or whitespace.
==> ERROR: pkgver() generated an invalid version: latest-stable
==> ERROR: Makepkg was unable to build mod_pagespeed-git.
